New 6 hour Ethics Training Being Offered to Mental Health Practitioners

Ethics in 2020: Covid, Crisis, and the Changing World We Live In

Unlike my other courses, this 6 hour CE is taught in person, or through Zoom. Even though the pandemic has caused so many difficulties and hardships, I still believe connecting with each other through learning is important. So, I decided to begin offering an option for agencies, departments, counseling firms, and any other group or organization a live CE course that will earn each attendee 6 hours of Ethics towards his/her licensure.

What’s in the Course??

It’s actually broken down into two sections, each lasting three hours with a lunch break in between. As for the first section, the training focuses on Ethics related to utilizing telehealth services. Due to the pandemic, it doesn’t seem like telehealth is going away any time soon, so this course will provide attendees with information on maintaining high ethical standards while using telehealth or distance counseling technologies. In the first three hours, attendees will:

  • Review current ethical standards related to telehealth.

  • Identify required documentation when utilizing telehealth.

  • Identify risk management strategies to ensure ethical delivery of telehealth services.

  • Review ACA Code of Ethics Section H (Distance Counseling, Technology, and Social Media)

During the second three hours, we will be offering some different information regarding ethics. In this section, attendees will:

  • Discuss upcoming and current rule changes for LPCs.

  • Learn a 7 step ethical decision making model

  • Review current LPC Ethics rules (22 TAC Part 30, Chapter 681, Subchapter C)

In this section, we will outline all the current changes that have been made under the BHEC (Texas Behavioral Health Executive Committee) so attendees can have the most updated information regarding his/her licensure. We will then outline a seven step ethical decision making model, and use this model to discuss current ethical dilemmas that attendees may need to address. Finally, we will use the remaining time to review the LPC Ethics rules. I think it’s very important that we all review these rules on a frequent basis.

As you can see, as an LPC Supervisor, I’ve tailored this specific training for LPCs, but it can also be offered to comply with standards for LMFTs and LSWs as well.
