What is supervision?
Supervision is crucial to the growth and education of an LPC Intern. For a minimum of 18 months, LPC Interns work under the supervision of a board approved LPC Supervisor while earning a minimum of 3000 hours of experience. For more details regarding the supervision requirements (as well as other information regarding the rules and policies that regulate Licensed Professional Counselors in Texas), please review the LPC Rules HERE.
How to choose the best LPC Supervisor for you?
This is an important question to consider. You will be spending a lot of time (and money) during the supervision process, so you want to find an LPC Supervisor that will best meet your needs. Things to consider:
What are my career goals? Based on your goals, it’s recommended you work with a supervisor that can help you meet your specific needs. For example, if you have career goals to work in private practice, it might serve you well to be supervised by someone in private practice. If you desire to work with a specific population of clients, try to find a supervisor that already works in that niche.
What is my theoretical orientation? Consider contracting with an LPC Supervisor that matches your theoretical orientation to therapy. It’s good to learn new ways of helping clients, but your orientation is the foundation of the therapeutic process. If you use Cognitive Behavioral approaches, and your supervisor uses a Psychoanalytic approach, it may cause some struggles with receiving beneficial feedback and support during supervision. This doesn’t mean it can’t work, rather it’s something to consider when deciding on a supervisor.
How much can I afford? Supervision isn’t cheap. Your supervisor takes full professional responsibility for all of your counseling activities, as well as helps you develop into a fully licensed professional. It might be tempting to find the cheapest option for supervision, and that may be your best option, but make sure the LPC Supervisor will help meet your long term needs.
Why choose me?
As an approved LPC Supervisor in Texas, I am licensed to offer supervision services for LPC Associates. Part of what makes supervision unique with me is my experience. I have been working in the field of counseling since 2006, and since that time, have provided counseling services in the following environments:
Private Practice- I currently own and operate a private practice with a specific niche in offering court-ordered treatment services (if interested in this area of work, click here for more info). In the past, I’ve also worked in traditional private practice settings, utilizing insurance panels and EAP’s to offer counseling services to individuals and families.
I have worked with multiple populations including adults, children, and families in a variety of settings.
As a Licensed School Counselor, I’ve worked in the school setting as an Elementary, Middle, and High School Counselor.
My theoretical orientation is based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution-Focused modalities. Though I’ve used other theories at times in the past, most of my treatment programs are based on a CBT foundation.
Being a supervisor is an extremely important part of my work. My goal is to help LPC Associates meet their career goals by offering the best service possible. I’m happy to discuss the possibility of providing you supervision, or helping you find someone that may be a better fit.
