Last week, some of the changes to the ethical rules were addressed. This week, we will be looking at updates to LPC Supervision in Texas. Section 681.93 (Supervision Requirements) was completely repealed and replaced with a new Section 681.93. Though some of the section is the same, it’s very important to completely review this section, especially if you are an LPC Supervisor or LPC Intern. Here are some of the things to note:

  • Supervisors must keep a written record of each supervision session including: signed and dated copy of board’s supervisory agreement (if Intern is being supervised by two supervisors, each supervisor should have a copy of both agreements), copy of LPC Intern’s wall certificate, fees and record of payment, date of each session, record of LPC Intern’s leave of one month or more (if needed), and record of concerns discussed with LPC Intern and written remediation plan (if needed).

  • The full professional responsibility for the counseling activities of the LPC Intern rests fully with the supervisor. This is important because the supervisor is accountable for the Intern’s behavior. For supervisors, it’s very important to have a solid supervision contract that is signed by the LPC Intern. This can help with protecting you from any possible inappropriate behavior by the LPC Intern.

  • Supervisors must review all provisions of the Act and board rules in this chapter (681) during supervision. The supervisor must also ensure that the intern is aware of these rules and remains in full compliance with the rules.

  • The supervisor must ensure that all supervised experience was completed AFTER the intern receives his/her LPC Intern license, and in not less than 18 months of supervised experience,

The Supervision requirements were completely rewritten, but still maintains a lot of the previous requirements. The best thing to do is review all the rules yourself. In the next post, I will be covering the changes to LPC Intern requirements. There are some big changes that allow for new supervision opportunities.

PLEASE NOTE: these are some of the highlighted changes/clarifications to the LPC Rules. It is recommended you read the new rules in their entirety. Also, this is my thoughts and interpretations of the new rules. It is recommended you consult with the LPC Board if you have any questions regarding the new rules.
